Elbert, Colorado is a quiet town in the southwestern corner of Elbert County. The town was established in 1874, with a post office in operation since 1875. It served as a busy business center with its close proximity to the railroad and being in the middle of some of the best farms and ranches in Colorado. This was until the flood in 1935 which wiped out most of the town. Most recently, this sleepy town is beginning to prosper again where buildings and homes are being restored and more people are moving into the small community.
Elbert is considered a census-designated place (CDP), but does not have its own local government. Instead, the town is governed by the local county officials including the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, human services and motor vehicle registration.
